How to protect your data and money if your smartphone is stolen

The easiest way to steal a phone is to pull it out of a bag or pocket in a crowd where people are close to each other. This is often used by thieves, for example, at free concerts, in places of public festivities. If this happened to you - act immediately and do not give in to emotions, there is a chance that you will be able to return your beloved smartphone.
What to do if the smartphone is "taken away": important steps
The very first and most obvious - call your number from another phone, perhaps you just forgot it somewhere and will be returned (sometimes for a reward). If there is no answer, try the next steps.
1. Track the location of your smartphone using the Find My Phone function.
If you have Android, go to android.com/find and sign in to your Google account. Next, select the desired device and mark it as lost, after which a notification will be sent to it, and information on where the device is located will appear on the map.
On iOS, it's just as simple: go to Find My (iOS 13 or later) / Find My iPhone (iOS 12 or later), or go to iCloud.com and track your device. Do not forget that the service only shows the approximate location of the smartphone.
2. Delete important data.
If it is critical for you that unauthorized persons cannot access the data on your device, erase all information remotely. This can be done in the same service where you tracked the device.
Remember, if you take this step, Find My iPhone will not be able to locate your device. If you delete your device from your account after erasing data from your device, Activation Lock will turn off. After that, an unauthorized person will be able to use your device.
3. Block your SIM card.
Contact your service provider in order to block the SIM card that remains in the phone. If this is not done right away, the thief will be able to use fast SMS transfers and withdraw funds from your account.
4. Block bank cards.
Block bank cards that are tied to the lost device. Contact the employees of the bank where you are servicing and inform them that your mobile phone has been stolen.
5. Check your accounts.
Check your accounts from other devices for login attempts. Use logout on all devices to avoid the risk of losing your accounts.
6. Contact the police.
Go to the police station at the scene of the theft and write a statement. Be sure to get information about the date of receipt of the application and the number under which it was registered. Please include the IMEI and serial number of the device in the application.
Find the IMEI and serial number of your device in the settings and write them down - the numbers can come in handy in case of theft of the device. 15 digits IMEI can be found on the packaging and in the warranty card or by dialing the command * # 06 #. The serial number can be found on the packaging or in the device information (in the settings).
Safeguarding Your Data: Simple Ways to Help Protect Your Reputation
Even if you are confident in the safety of your phone, it is never harmful to protect the data on it. Recommendations are given by Anton Kukanov, head of the Center for Digital Expertise of Roskachestvo:
1. Check if you have activated the ability to lock your smartphone remotely.
With its help, you can block the access of intruders to the data on the device and even erase it.
2. Always use a complex PIN or biometric login.
Even if your phone is stolen, the thief will have to make an effort to "crack" the lock and gain access to the contents of the smartphone.
3. Back up your data regularly or set it up to run automatically once a week.
This way you will preserve valuable data anyway, even if you lose your device.
4. Store photos, videos and documents in the cloud, not on your device.
In this case, without prejudice to important files, you can remotely erase everything from the device, while the data itself will be saved.
How to get insurance
Some insurance companies are ready to indemnify for theft of the phone for a fee. To do this, upon the occurrence of an insured event, it is necessary to provide documents confirming the appeal to the police, as well as, if necessary, a decision to initiate a criminal case. If the decision is positive, insurance compensation will be paid.
Android and iOS have very useful tools that allow you to quickly find your smartphone if it is lost or stolen. Even if you can't get your phone back, you can remotely lock it and erase all data.
Preventive measures in case of loss
In order to use the services of finding a smartphone in case of loss, you need to give them some permissions in advance. In particular, Android devices must have two important features enabled: Location and Find My Device. In addition, of course, the gadget must be associated with a Google account.
Take the time to check the status of these functions right now. Often, users obsessed with the idea of global surveillance turn off all possible geolocation services, thereby significantly reducing their chances of returning a lost smartphone in the future. On Android go to Google settings then in Security and activate the option Find your device if not already enabled.
On iOS, open Settings then iCloud and activate Find iPhone ... Then make sure Location settings included in the settings item Confidentiality .
What to do if you lost your Android phone
Sign in to your Google account and use the tool Find my phone to access real-time information about the location of your smartphone. Also you can download the application Find your device from Google Play to any other Android gadget at your disposal.
With the help of the relevant points, you can:
- Ring the phone to locate it. When you select this item, your phone will ring. It is possible that he is peacefully lying somewhere under the pillow.
- Lock your phone with a message displayed on the screen. If you forget your phone, for example, in a cafe or taxi, this way you can inform the staff to return the device to you. To do this, set a digital (!) Password to unlock the device (or specify the one you are already using) and enter the message text and a spare phone number for communication. Your message to the finder will be displayed on the screen with an offer to call you.
- Delete information on the phone and log out of your Google account - in case you are sure that the phone is stolen and it is unlikely that it will be returned to you voluntarily. Just click on the button Clear device .
What to do if you lost your iPhone
Use the service iCloud and sign in to your account with your Apple ID to find out exactly where your phone is. You can also use the application Find iPhone installed on any other Apple device. Similarly, you can find MacBook, iPad, iPod, Apple Watch.
Using the corresponding buttons, you can:
- Play sound to locate your iPhone if it's around the house.
- Block device with transferring it to the lost mode. Then in iCloud and app Find iPhone all movements of the device in the last 24 hours will be tracked. The device will be locked, and your message with a backup phone number for communication will be displayed on the screen.
- Erase all data from the device if it is irretrievably lost.
What to do if the phone is turned off
The above methods only work when the phone is turned on. But if the device is stolen, most likely, the first thing to do is turn it off. Are there any chances to return the smartphone in this case?
There are, but very ghostly. You can try to find out the IMEI of the gadget - this is a unique number that is assigned to each device. By this number, the device can be identified, no matter what the intruders do with it. Here's how to find out the IMEI.
- For an Android device, go to Find My Phone and click on the button with the letter iin the circle next to the picture of your phone in the upper left corner. The IMEI code will be displayed in the tooltip.
- For iPhone, use iTunes. Click on the image of your device and in the menu on the left select the tab Overview ... In field Serial number your IMEI will be listed.
What to do next? On the Internet, you can find many resources offering to find a phone by IMEI online. But they are all fiction. There is simply no technical opportunity to perform such a search, so do not hope for a miracle and do not use the services of questionable services. Here is the only correct course of action:
- Find documents on your phone if you bought it new.
- Go to the police station and file a theft report.
In theory, police officers should send a request to the mobile operator, who should compare the IMEI number and the data of the SIM card used in the phone. Then the police can contact the owner of the SIM card and invite him to testify. But this is all theory: in practice, no one will spend so much time and resources to find your device for 10,000 rubles. So, de facto, it is impossible to find a phone by IMEI.
Many of us have our whole lives in smartphones. Lost, and all photos, videos, personal and business correspondence, documents and access to accounts - everything is gone! What to do if you lost your precious smartphone or has it stolen from you? Run to buy a new one? Wait, in this article we will tell you how to protect the device from loss and how to find it if the trouble does happen.
What to do if your smartphone is missing?
No matter how trite it may sound, but first of all, do not panic and try to call your number from another device, or ask someone to call you. It is possible that your device is somewhere near you, and you can hear it or see it when there is an incoming call. It may happen that the silent mode will be configured in the smartphone, but thanks to SMS commands or Internet requests, this can be corrected, which will be discussed further in the article.
There is also a possibility that the person who found the smartphone wants to contact you himself, waiting for your call. After all, there are kind, honest people among us. You can speed up the refund process by providing information to the person who found the smartphone. To do this, in the settings of the smartphone screen, there is usually an item called "Text on the locked screen". You can enter any contact information in the field, which will then be displayed on the locked screen.
Tracking the device is also possible using standard operating system tools. On Android OS, there is a tool called Find My Device , which exists as an application available for download in the Google Play store, or as a website that you can go to using this link by entering the account information used in your smartphone.
With the help of such a tool, you can not only see where the smartphone is or once was, but also remotely lock the device, delete data or ring it. The sound will turn on even if the silent mode is set in the settings.
For devices running on IOS, the function is available Locator designed to search for IPhone, iPad or iPod. The functionality of the Locator is similar to Find My Device - it is calling the device, blocking, displaying contact information on the screen and tracking the location. Detailed instructions describing all the actions are on the official Apple website.
Third Party Android Apps
Not all users have enough functionality of the Find My Device service from Google, and in some cases applications are needed that could get additional information about the person who stole the smartphone. This will help the software Lost Android, Cerberus or Reptilicus. The latter, at the time of this writing, is the most popular and functional solution that can turn on a loud alarm on a controlled device, take photos and videos from its cameras, record sound from a microphone and during telephone conversations, receive information about a phone number and an operator, intercept messages, receive SIM card change notifications, remotely block and restart the smartphone, prohibit the installation of third-party applications, determine the location and do many other actions.
Some functions require Root rights, but the main functionality can work without them. If you make the application a system one, then it will remain in memory even after resetting the settings in the smartphone, but this usually does not save from flashing. However, some manufacturers, for example Meizu, have built-in protection methods that do not allow installing new firmware or accessing Recovery (recovery mode) without a password or professional equipment.
The main functions of the applications require an Internet connection to work, but sometimes they will be useful SMS commands , for example, to turn on the Internet. Reptilicus, for example, is able to intercept a message so that the user who stole the device does not notice that the smartphone or tablet is being controlled remotely. It is possible to track a smartphone without the Internet and even without the included GPS - only by the signal of cell towers, but the display accuracy in this case is noticeably reduced.
As anti-theft systems, it is customary to use and antivirus applications (Dr.Web, Avast, Kaspersky and others), which, as a rule, have functionality that allows you to block the device, track it and take a photo of a person trying to access a smartphone through the front camera.
Another option is software for automating actions ... We are talking about applications Tasker, MacroDroid and analogues, in which you can customize or install a ready-made version of the plug-in, which allows you to take a photo on the front camera and determine the location of the smartphone when performing certain actions (for example, unlocking a smartphone). Various SMS commands are also available in this software.
Is there an analogue of Cerberus and Reptilicus for IOS?
The IOS operating system is proprietary, with far fewer actions available to track the device than Android. More precisely, there are applications like iCaughtU that are available for installation only on smartphones with jailbreak, so this option cannot be called massive.
Considering that, in general, IOS is safer than Android due to its closed nature, you can limit yourself to the standard Locator service.
How to protect yourself from theft?
All incidents in life cannot be foreseen, and thieves will always have the opportunity to take possession of your property, but by observing some simple rules, it is quite possible to minimize the risk of losing a mobile device or causing damage. Here are some simple rules that many of us often ignore:
- Keep your smartphone with you at all times, without leaving it unattended.
- Carry the device in a deep pocket or in another place where it will be difficult to pull it out, at least without the knowledge of the owner of the device.
- Use complex long passwords when turning on your smartphone and when entering applications with personal information. It is better that passwords are different in all cases.
- Avoid face unlocking in smartphones that can be photo unlocked. Often, when scanning a face, the operating system warns that a person similar to you can gain access to the device, while fingerprint scanners have become a much more reliable method of identification in recent years.
- Use services and applications that help block access to smartphone data.
- Store information in the cloud storage. If you lose your smartphone and if you have access to your account, all the necessary information can be saved, regardless of whether you can return the smartphone. Yes, account hacks are not uncommon, but they usually happen when you go to questionable links and fraudulent sites.
Should you contact the police if your smartphone is stolen or lost?
It is believed that contacting the police does nothing, since government officials have so much work to do. And if they do, it will be the last thing to search for a mobile device. Even with the coordinates of the smartphone obtained using various applications, it may seem that the police take on work very reluctantly, but, as numerous reviews show, it all depends on the competence of the employees, their workload and the desire to help.
In any case, you have the right to count on the acceptance of a statement about the theft of a smartphone, and if they refuse to accept it, then a refusal in writing should be required to appeal it.
The important point is that the police will only consider the theft report , and not about the loss - no one will deal with the search for lost things that were not brought to the police. At the same time, the person who found the smartphone must hand it over to the owner or police officers, otherwise his actions can be regarded as misappropriation of someone else's property, which falls under Article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (theft). When transferred to the police, the found things will end up in a special warehouse, and a smartphone lost in public transport, at train stations or airports may be waiting for you in a lost property office or lost property warehouses.
How is the search for a smartphone carried out?
When accepting an application, in order to significantly simplify the search, police officers ask for a unique identification number of the apparatus. A more accurate name is International Mobile Equipment Identifier or abbreviated IMEI .
This is a unique identification number, which contains information about the smartphone model, manufacturer and equipment used in the device. Even if you change the SIM card or programmatically change the identifier, telecom operators will still see exactly the IMEI that was originally used in the smartphone's firmware.
The identification number (and usually there are two, since most modern smartphones use two SIM cards) can be found in the smartphone settings menu or on the box or stickers supplied. Ideally, in addition to IMEI, in case of theft, you will need to present a receipt confirming your purchase of the device.
Can i change IMEI?
After the theft, it happens that the identification number of the device at the firmware level is changed in order to appropriate someone else's property, which is prohibited by law.
It should be clarified that for 2020 in Russia there is no punishment for changing the IMEI if the number changes on your smartphone for personal purposes not related to criminal activity. The methods for changing the IMEI are still available in the public domain on specialized forums, and the methodology may differ for each processor. This all concerns Android smartphones, in which changing the IMEI in most cases is much easier than on Apple devices.
However, according to rumors, already from 2021 Russia may introduce fines for falsifying IMEI codes for all users, and a unique number of a smartphone, tablet and other equipment using mobile communications will be tied to the subscriber. In the future, mobile operators will be able to quickly block stolen or lost devices, which should ultimately reduce the number of thefts.
Do operators have their own bases and how to reach them?
Cellular operators have information about which SIM card is used in a stolen smartphone, being able to find out the approximate location of the device by IMEI, but they can only disclose such data at the request of the police.
However, the subscriber has the right to block the SIM cards that were in the mobile device in order to avoid costs and other problems that may arise when a SIM card is used by fraudsters. Additionally, a bank card should be blocked if it is tied to a smartphone - you should already contact the bank's employees, or the blocking is often available from your bank's mobile application.
Is theft insurance effective?
Often sellers in stores, offering to insure the device, say that the insurance covers all cases, including theft. However, it’s not worth taking our word for it, but rather read the terms of the insurance contract ... It often turns out that theft under Part 1 of Article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation is not an insured event. That is, you should not count on the payment of insurance in the event of theft without illegal entry into the premises or other storage, and if it was committed by one person, and not by a group of persons.
In addition, theft insurance may have territorial restrictions. For example, it may be indicated that when you are in another city, different from the actual place of residence, money is not paid. There may be many other clauses in the agreement, due to which the payment of funds will be refused.
Also, insurance companies often request such documents as a decision to initiate a criminal case (on theft, robbery or robbery) and a decision to suspend the preliminary investigation - a complete list of documents must be listed in the insurance contract. The preliminary investigation period is 2 months with the possibility of extension to 3 months, so you should not count on the fastest possible receipt of payment. But, if your case falls under the terms of the contract, then you will definitely receive money for a stolen smartphone. Otherwise, you should appeal the decision of the insurance company by filing a lawsuit.
Smartphones are one of the most seductive things for pickpockets. We explain how to proceed to increase the likelihood of returning the gadget. And yes, the chances are very slim.
So what to do?! Lock your smartphone and sim card!
The most important step after a phone is stolen or lost is to remotely lock it as soon as possible. This action will save you from leaking important information. In addition, your second contact number will be displayed on the smartphone screen. If you're lucky, the pickpocket will contact you and offer a ransom for the stolen device. You should not refuse the ransom - perhaps this will be the only chance to get the phone back, moreover, for a small fee. But coming to a meeting with the police is pointless: an attacker may say that he just found a phone on the street or in a taxi, and no one will prove otherwise.
There are several ways to lock your iPhone. The most convenient of them is to go to the iCloud website from any other device, log in to the system using your Apple ID and click the "Find iPhone" button. After a short search, the service will show a map showing all the Apple devices that are turned on. Find your iPhone among them and activate Lost Mode. If you are worried about the safety of your data, you can also delete all information from it - for this, click the "Erase iPhone" button.
By the way, you can do the same operation not only through the website, but also through the Find iPhone application on other Apple devices: for example, on the iPad. The scheme is the same there.
You can do the same trick with Android smartphones. You need to log into your Google account through a browser, and then go to the search site. There you will see all the phones that are connected to your account. Choose the lost one and click "Lock device" or "Clear device" if you want to delete all data from it at the same time.
If at the time of the search the thief managed to turn off your smartphone, then it will still be blocked the first time it is turned on.
Another important topic is to block the SIM card, which is especially important if both the smartphone and the wallet have been stolen. Moreover, there is no password on your device. Attackers can write off money from your card simply by making a transfer. Even by moving the SIM card to another phone, you can withdraw money from the account through the balance check and the linked online bank application.
Contact the police
It is better not to hesitate to contact the law enforcement agencies: the sooner you come to the department and draw up a statement, the more likely it is to return a valuable thing. If the police will assure you that the case is a "hangman" and it is better not to write a statement, insist on your own.
It is important to describe in detail all the details of that day, especially if you do not remember exactly when the smartphone disappeared. It is also necessary to remember all the distinguishing features of the device: scratches on the case / screen, the color of the cover, the presence of films on the screen, etc. The police should have a sample of a statement about the theft of property - feel free to ask the police officer if he himself did not provide an example ... As a last resort, look at examples on Google.
In the application, you will be asked to indicate the IMEI of the phone - a unique identifier number that is assigned to each smartphone. The police will use it to look for your device.
IPhone owners can find out the IMEI in two ways. The easiest way to look at the box from the smartphone: the 15-digit number is printed on the back, on the barcode. If the packaging is not at hand, then you will need to log into your account from another i-device (for example, from an iPad). Open the settings and click on your name, it is at the very top. Then scroll down the menu and find your stolen smartphone in the list of devices. Click on it and you will see detailed information about it, including serial number and IMEI.
Android device owners can find the IMEI of their smartphone on the search page - this is the same site from which you have already blocked your phone. There, again, you need to select the lost gadget and press the "i" button opposite its name. In the pop-up window, you will see a 15-digit set of numbers. Well, and the second option is to look at the number on the box, if it has survived.
How do police officers work?
We talked with law enforcement officials and found out what the police are doing after receiving a statement from the victim. According to the former police lieutenant Zlata Vlasova, first of all, Interior Ministry officials contact mobile operators.
The police writes a request to all cellular companies in order to establish information whether this device worked after it was lost. The request indicates the IMEI of the phone and the specific date of loss. Zlata Vlasova.
It takes at least a week to wait for a response from operators. If the phone was turned on during this time, then the cellular company indicates the date, full name and registration address of the person to whom the SIM card is issued and the phone numbers to which the calls were made.
“But it works in the event that some simpleton starts using the phone. And if not, all cellular companies will answer - silence, ”says Vlasova. According to her, today it has become much more difficult to find a stolen smartphone. First, people block the iPhone, so the thief can no longer call from it. Secondly, most criminals know that the phone can be instantly traced, so they immediately sell it without making any calls.
The editors talked with one of the capital's interrogators - an employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, who investigates only light cases of certain categories and has fewer official powers than an investigator. On condition of anonymity, he said that a successful outcome in the case of theft of a smartphone is a real rarity. Moreover, the police themselves sometimes dissuade victims from filing a complaint.
Most often in the department they say: of course you can write a statement, a pre-investigation check will go, but most likely you will simply waste a lot of time, because you will be interviewed first by the operas, then the investigator, to whom you will tell the same thing, fill out a bunch of papers.
If the victim still writes a statement, then the following happens. First of all, a person is interrogated, after which the investigator or interrogator goes to the scene of the theft and examines the scene. Surveillance cameras in the area are also important: the records from them are also viewed by police officers.
If a policeman is very, very conscientious and he has nothing more to do, he can still go through stolen stolen in the area to see if they have thorough phones.
He also added that it is not necessary to hope for a favorable outcome - on fact with stolen iPhone you can say goodbye. True, the former lieutenant of the Police of Vlasov shared more inspiring statistics.
"Opening the loss / theft of cell phones is 50 to 50. And this is a very good percentage. It all depends on whether someone will turn on or not, "said Vlasov.
How to steal smartphones!
Excluding situations where you have stolen with a smartphone or threats forced to pay things, smartphones steal and more sophisticated methods. Here is some of them:
- Situation: You are standing near the doors in transport, the thief just snags the smartphone from the hands and runs away. How to avoid: Before stopping, keep the phone tightly or remove into pocket.
- Situation: You are offered to guess how much you weigh, lifting you up on your hands. Fun and at ease, the debate pulls the phone from the pocket. How to avoid: Do not agree to dubious proposals of strangers.
- Situation: You remove money in an ATM and put the phone nearby - near the keyboard. The thief sharply grabs the phone and runs away, and you tupit in doubt: run behind him and leave money and card or stay. How to avoid: At such moments, in general, in public places, it is better not to leave the phone at all unattended.
- Situation: You left the phone in the locker room of the gym or handed it in the wardrobe together with the jacket. Thieves took him to himself. How to avoid: You should not leave valuable things in locker rooms, it is better to always carry them with you. Do not trust the cabinets and wardrobes.
Every day in Russia, the attackers steal thousands of smartphones. However, it is obvious that this figure should be multiplied by a minimum of five, since most of the victims do not go to the police. As statistics show, theft of the phone is one of the most common criminal offenses. Especially often the thieves can fly in places of large cluster of people, where you can imperceptibly pull the gadget from your pocket or bags.
Thefts of the smartphone troubles are not completed - you can subsequently get a huge loop problem - lose money, encounter a leakage of data and personal information that can cause reputation damage.
If this happened to you - act immediately: there is a chance that you will be able to return your favorite smartphone. Specialists of the Center for Digital Examination of Roscatia tell what steps need to be taken to not part with their smartphone and data, including personal, forever.
For criminals, the use of kidnapped information becomes as attractive as the distribution of the device itself. The kidnapper can access your personal information, so it must be securely protected. How to do it? Recommendations gives Anton Kukanov, Head of the Center for Digital Examination of Rotation.
How to protect information?
1. Check if you are activated by the possibility of a remote lock of the smartphone. With it, you can block the access of attackers to the data on the device and even erase them.
2. Always use a complex PIN or input by biometric data. Even if your phone is stolen, the Wargo will have to make an effort to "crack" blocking and access the contents of the smartphone.
3. Back up your data regularly or set it up to run automatically once a week. This way you will preserve valuable data anyway, even if you lose your device.
4. For the same reason, store your photos, videos, and documents in the cloud instead of on your device. In this case, without prejudice to important files, you can remotely erase everything from the device, while the data itself will be saved.
5. Find the IMEI and serial number of your device in the settings and write them down - the numbers can be useful in case of theft of the device. 15 digits of IMEI can be found on the packaging and in the warranty card or by dialing the command * # 06 #. The serial number can be found on the packaging or in the device information (in the settings).
What if your smartphone is already stolen?
1. Call your number from another phone - perhaps you left your smartphone somewhere, it will be noticed and answered.
2. If there is no answer, track the location of the smartphone using the "Find my phone" function.
3. If it is critical for you that unauthorized persons cannot access the data on your device, erase all information remotely. This can be done in the same service where you tracked the device. If you take this step, Find My iPhone will not be able to locate your device. If you delete your device from your account after erasing data from your device, Activation Lock is disabled. After that, an unauthorized person can use your device.
4. Contact your service provider in order to block the SIM card that remains in the phone. If you don't do this right away, the thief will be able to use fast SMS transfers and withdraw funds from your account.
5. Block bank cards that are tied to the lost device. Contact the employees of the bank where you are serviced and inform them that your mobile phone has been stolen.
6. Check your accounts from other devices for login attempts. Use logout on all devices to avoid the risk of losing your accounts.
7. Go to the police station at the scene of the theft and write a statement. Be sure to get information about the date of receipt of the application and the number under which it was registered. Please include the IMEI and serial number of the device on the application.

Find your Android phone. How to track a switched off or lost phone on Android via IMEI or computer
What to do if your phone is stolen
What to do if the phone is stolen and how the violator will be punished
Find a phone through the program installed on it
This method is suitable if the phone has been stolen or lost.
A program must be installed on the phone in advance (and there are a great many of them on the Internet), which collects all information about the phone (calls, SMS, files downloaded to the phone, etc.) and sends it to you, for example, by mail or to your personal account.
To install the program, the phone must be of a relatively new model and have certain technical characteristics. To transmit location information, the phone must have a GPS module installed and the Internet must be connected.
How it works: In case of loss of the phone, as soon as it is turned on and at the same time there is access to the Internet, you will receive all the necessary information, including its location.
Find a phone using an account
This method is suitable for modern gadgets (phones, tablets).
To do this, your device must be connected to the Internet and have a GPS module.
To be able to track the location on your gadget, you need to connect your Google account and set the settings that allow you to determine the coordinates of your device.
In case of theft, loss of your phone or tablet, you can always log into your Google account and see the location and movement of your phone or other gadget.
Find phone by IMEI
This method is suitable if the phone has been stolen. It can be considered one of the most reliable, but at the same time the most labor-intensive.
Finding a phone by IMEI allows you to determine not only the location of the phone, but also the SIM card installed in it, and hence the person to whom it is registered.
How can this method be applied?
In case of loss of the phone, you must contact the law enforcement agencies. When contacting, you must have the IMEI of your phone with you, it can be found in the box from the phone (it can be located on a special sticker, instructions or the box itself). If the box from the phone has disappeared as unnecessary or IMEI cannot be restored for any other reason, you just need to remember your phone number.
What happens next:
If you know IMEI.
A law enforcement officer sends information to cellular companies, according to which companies must provide information about the owner of the SIM card with which the phone appeared on the network after it was lost
In case you do not know the IMEI of the phone.
The police officer makes a request to the cellular company to provide the IMEI of the device from which you previously made calls. Further, the received IMEI is sent to cellular companies with an indication of the provision of information about the owner of the SIM card with which the phone was used and is being used after it was lost.
When a police officer has information about the owner of the SIM card with which the phone is used, it is not difficult to find the loss.
If you need a simple and quick way to determine the location of your phone, use the Movizor monitoring system. Keep in mind that to track a subscriber through the Movizor service, you need to confirm the subscriber in the form of an SMS reply to an incoming message, so you need to connect it when the phone is in your hands to prevent possible loss or theft.
What actions need to be taken when the phone is stolen
Call the personal number from another phone, this will make it easier to find. It is worth looking for him only on the first day after the loss. And if a stranger answered, you can ask where he got this phone from. Do not be rude when talking, as this may scare him away. If the phone has not been found, or someone else has already found it, but does not want to return it just like that, or for a fee, then you need to contact the police with a statement about the loss / theft of the phone.
Report theft to the police
Do not panic, think it over calmly and do not get nervous. Report the theft of your phone to the police and file a report. It should include personal data (last name, first name, patronymic, home address, spare phone number (if available), and also try to describe the mobile phone as accurately as possible and present documents for it.
After submitting the application, you need to find out its number, if this is not done, then this case will most likely be “forgotten” and you will not be able to follow the progress of the investigation, and then you just have to wait for the result. But you also need to do something else, without the participation of the police - to block the SIM card.
Urgently block your SIM card
If there is a large amount of money on the SIM card, then you need to block it very quickly, and if the SIM card has a small amount, then you can wait a day or two, in the hope that the thief will call someone and this call can be tracked his. Some modern phones have a tracking device in their operating system, if there is one, then you need to report this to the police.
In order not to forget about the statement, it is worth reminding about it in the police department.
How to avoid mobile phone theft?
You shouldn't put your mobile phone on public display: put it on a table in a cafe, hold it in your hands in public places for too long. Keep your phone in securely closed pockets, preferably inside pockets, especially when using public transport. And in general, you should not take an expensive mobile phone with you on the road, if the phone is used only for communication, then you can buy a cheap one.
Write down the unique IMEI number of the phone
After purchasing the phone, write down the IMEI (it can be found in the documents for the phone, or under the battery), the code consists of 15 characters. With this special code, you can find your phone very quickly.
With each passing day, phones are becoming more popular, but the number of thefts is also increasing. After all, phones are not so cheap, especially the latest models, the price of which can reach 60,000 thousand. What is the purpose of stealing mobile phones? Of course, for the sake of selling them, or thieves keep them for themselves, for their own use.
Of course, one cannot do without a telephone in the modern world, communication is essential. And modern telephones are no longer only capable of communicating, but also of searching for information and can be used as a “mini-computer”.
Procedure if a mobile phone is stolen
Theft of expensive equipment is thriving, since it is difficult to prove the fact of theft, and it is very easy to sell property. They steal laptops, tablets, but more often it is customary to steal mobile phones. And if the phone is stolen, it is very difficult for the owner to return it, and even more so to bring the thief to justice. Theft of mobile phones is widespread not only in Russia, but also in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus and even England.
Modern gadgets are quite expensive and easy to sell.
Therefore, the more expensive the handset, the higher the chances that it could fall into the hands of a thief. The owner of a smartphone from whom it was stolen for the first time may become confused and not know what to do.
This allows the robbers to escape from the crime scene and dispose of the stolen goods in the shortest possible time. If the attacker was able to steal the phone, you need to perform a number of actions to quickly detect the loss:
- When the mobile is not turned off, the owner can send an SMS message to the thief offering to buy the gadget.
- Be sure to call the operator and ask them to block the SIM card. But you shouldn't do it right after the loss. If the perpetrator calls from this number, it will be easier to find him.
- You should immediately call your number. For example, from a mobile friend. If the thief did not have time to go far or turn off the phone, he can easily be found.
If all these actions did not help in the search for a gadget, you should contact the police. According to the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, theft of a cell phone falls under Article 158. The minimum term of imprisonment for this is up to 2 years.
If aggravating circumstances are found, then the punishment for theft will be much more serious.
The sanction of this article also includes the payment of a fine.
Therefore, how much the attacker will have to pay and what exactly threatens for theft depends on the qualification of the crime. The owner of the phone can contact the police.
If the theft was committed on the street, you can immediately go to the patrol officers. This often helps to find criminals in hot pursuit. In other cases, it is worth going to the nearest police station and applying.
An investigation will be carried out into the theft of the property and the chances of finding the stolen smartphone through the police are quite high. Law enforcement officers can trace the phone and identify the culprit. But often such cases are ignored by the police as knowingly not being solved.
You can complain about their work, or rather, inaction, by filing a complaint with the management of the unit or a higher authority. But, as a rule, this does not greatly affect the detection of such petty thefts. The victim still needs to write a statement. The main thing is to arrange everything correctly.
Usually the police help the citizens by providing a sample.
However, when designing, it is important to consider the following:
- Next comes the part of the document in which the victim needs to detail the circumstances of the theft of the phone.
- The application is made to the name of the head of the department. Therefore, in the "header" of the document, you should indicate his full name, title, etc. You also need to write your personal data.
How to find a stolen phone yourself. Are phones found if stolen
A cell phone for many people is becoming a store of personal data, important information and just a gadget that they use every day. Sometimes, through inattention, a person can lose it or an intruder can steal it.
In such cases, you should know how to find your phone, what you need to do in advance with your phone. This is the most unpleasant situation that can happen if your mobile is stolen. The intruders immediately remove the SIM card, turn off the device.
This greatly reduces the list of ways to get your mobile back. If you managed to turn off your cell phone, then you have only one way to find the switched off phone - contact the law enforcement agencies. To do this, you need:
- Expect the civil service to fulfill its responsibilities.
- To identify the phone, you should write the IMEI code, which is unique for each specific device.
- Find a box from the device, a receipt from the store, take a passport.
- Come to the police station with your passport, write a statement.
The number of mobile phone thefts has greatly decreased after the devices have become more affordable, but there are still many cases of theft.
The police will try to find a cell phone through the operator, but they are rarely found. It is necessary to mentally prepare for the fact that you will have to purchase a new cell phone. The situation is completely different if you lost your phone, it sat down and turned off, but the card remained inside.
The provider will be able to determine the location of the device and the gadget will be returned to you.
This code is the unique serial identifier for the devices.
You can find it on the box of the device or under the smartphone battery. Consists of 15 digits, if necessary, a special command can display it on the phone screen. It is recommended after purchase to write down the IMEI somewhere in a notebook or on a warranty card / check.
If you go to the police, you will need this code. Law enforcement agencies make a request to the court for permission to require the operator to find the phone by IMEI. All smartphones run on one of the operating systems (Windows Phone, Adnroid, iOS), which makes it a mini-PC.
With the help of satellites, a telecom operator can find a stolen cell using the IMEI code, only a provider can do this.
For this, there must be a court order with a request for this operation.
There are sites on the network that offer to track your device using the IMEI code. Third-party resources do not have this opportunity if, after entering the data, you are asked to send an SMS - this is an attempt to lure money out.
The code databases are kept only by the operator, they are not publicly available.
You can only enter the IMEI of your stolen smartphone, other users can then check if they are offered to buy a stolen phone.
When buying a package from a company, every person in Russia concludes an agreement and, as a rule, there is only one SIM card in use from the company.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to search for a phone by card number. Only a telecom operator has such technologies and capabilities, but it will not do this at your personal request.
What to do if your phone is stolen
It's no secret that thefts of mobile phones have not only become more frequent lately, but have become quite widespread.
In the application, you must indicate the mobile number and IMEI. After a police request, the telecom operator can provide information about the movements of the device, according to the data received thanks to the IMEI code of your phone.
Moreover, both professionals and amateurs are “seized” by mobile phones. In short, today no one is immune from this. What to do if your mobile phone is stolen? There are essentially two options. The first is to grieve and try to forget about it as an unpleasant fact of life, and then buy a new one and continue to behave more carefully.
The second is to try to get it back. Of course, this will require some effort and time, and there is no guarantee that the device will be returned.
Still worth a try. True, only if you have a box with a unique IMEI code (it is advisable to also have a receipt and other documents with you), because without this it is impossible to track the phone, and besides, you will not have proof that it is yours. (This is especially true for contract subscribers), you should call the operator and ask to block the number, then contact the department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs at the scene of the incident and write a statement addressed to the chief. Provide all details - time, place, circumstances of the theft, as well as information about the IMEI and phone number of the stolen SIM card.
This should be done as soon as possible, because usually a stolen phone is “sold” in a matter of days, and sometimes even hours.
In addition, if you react quickly, there is a chance to find not only the terminal itself, but the one who stole it. After all, thieves often actively call from a "freshly acquired" phone, spending money on the account, after which the SIM card is thrown away. You can, of course, try to call your number and ask to return the phone for a fee, but attackers rarely do such "noble" deeds. The application must be accepted and registered, and the case number and the name of the investigator must be given to you.
Or submit a refusal in writing. After that, you need to be persistent and actively (as much as possible) take an interest in the state of your case - then the chances of a return increase. The information provided to the victims is sent to a special department that deals with such cases.
In this case, the services of the operator are involved.
Find out if the terminal is being used, how often, and where. Given the capabilities of the base stations, the approximate location of the device can be calculated. Then it's up to the professionals: the police officers analyze the operational and technical information and, if successful, seize the phone. Of course, often after the theft of the terminal, attackers reflash it, changing the IMEI - then it is not possible to find the loss by technical means.
However, even in the case of a flashing, a sticker with the original IMEI remains on the phone itself, and a potential buyer can check the correspondence of the numbers on the case and in the memory.
So, refusing to buy dubious terminals will be not only legal, but also a rational decision. “My girlfriend was somehow stolen in a minibus Sony Ericsson W300i.
With the help of an acquaintance of a policeman, we managed to find out from which number the people who stole or bought it were calling.
If the phone was stolen
Every owner of a mobile phone can be a victim of theft or.
There is no specific application form, but do not forget to write your full name, contact phone number, address and sign. The application should indicate the circumstances in which you became a victim of theft or robbery, as well as information about the phone, such as the manufacturer, model, dimensions, color and IMEI of the missing device. Attach to the application copies of documents that confirm you as the rightful owner of the device. You can indicate the price for which the phone was purchased, preferably exaggerating and explaining that the cost is an exorbitant amount for you.
A written statement of theft must be filed at the location where the crime occurred. The application can be submitted not only to the ATC, but also to any traffic police post, fire department, Ministry of Emergency Situations, or just a district inspector. If you do not want to go to the department, the application can be sent by certified mail. So, your actions:
- Block the SIM card.
- Collect documents on the phone.
- Write and send a statement to the Department of Internal Affairs.
- Wait for an answer.
In a few days, you will receive an official response from the Department of Internal Affairs, which will tell you what they are going to take on the fact of your statement and what you should do in the future.
If you have seen the kidnapper, describe in detail his appearance, indicating his height, hair color, physique and face shape, special features (tattoos, earrings or scars). Such signs make it much easier to find the attacker. Using the rights of the victim, according to the criminal procedure code, you can write a statement to the telephone company asking for a report with calls from your mobile device. This is a unique 15-digit code that is used to mark each manufactured device. The IMEI of the device is usually indicated in the documents, at the very
What not to do if your iPhone is stolen
Let's fantasize: your iPhone was stolen with the Find iPhone feature turned on and the activation lock active, you turned on Lost Mode in iCloud, locked the device with a password, entered a contact phone number and a message asking to return it for a reward, and then turned to law enforcement authorities with a statement about the theft of your property by providing the IMEI. Further events can develop as follows:
The police officer will ask the attackers to be able to connect the iPhone to the cellular network and it can be found by the IMEI. If the device is locked with a lock password, then feel free to disable Lost Mode - even after that, an attacker will not be able to bypass the password, and you can reset it only by restoring the iPhone in DFU mode.
The police officer will offer or completely erase it to search by IMEI (so that the device can be activated and connected to the cellular network). In no case should this be done! If you remove iPhone from iCloud or request to erase it, Find My iPhone and Activation Lock are disabled. Such a device can be activated (without a password to the Apple ID) and used as intended. It is not a fact that even if an expensive device is found and it is not blocked on your Apple ID, the police officer will not appropriate it to himself - miracles happen, but rarely!
A person will call you to the contact phone number that you specified when activating the Lost Mode, posing as a support employee, service center or secret benefactor and asking to be removed or so that he could connect it to the Internet and you will find out where your iPhone is. History knows and. Don't be naive: never remove your iPhone from iCloud, let alone erase it.
Only the one who sees your message and holds a locked device can call the contact phone number that you specified when you turned on Lost Mode. A sane person will not buy a stolen iPhone, which means that no support or service center employee is calling you, but the attacker himself who stole your device (also not a fact, but the probability is high) and who certainly will not return the stolen phone to you.
A stolen iPhone is offline in iCloud, what should I do?
If your phone appears offline in Find My iPhone in iCloud, then it's not connected to the Internet. In this mode, it is impossible to remotely block (by the loss mode) and send a message to the device until someone connects it to the Internet. You have no choice but to wait for the notification of the activation of the Lost Mode. The letter will be sent to the email address where the Apple ID is registered.
How much to wait? If your device is locked with a password - not for long - to reset the iPhone password, you need to reflash, connect to the Internet and activate. As soon as the device connects to the network, Lost Mode will be enabled (your message and contact phone number will appear on the lock screen).
If the lock password (Touch ID) was not enabled in the iPhone settings and the Lost Mode was not activated (the device is offline), the attacker will be able to use the smartphone, but will not be able to disable the Find iPhone function, will not be able to restore it in iTunes (), and also reset and connect your Apple ID. iPhone will still be permanently locked with Activation Lock.
If your iPhone, iPad or MacBook is stolen, do not panic, there are ways to lock, find and return the device, but this is unlikely to be done quickly. First of all, enable Lost Mode, lock the device with a password (if the lock password was not enabled in its settings), enter the contact phone number and a message asking for a return. Then contact the law enforcement agencies with a statement about the theft of property, provide evidence that the device is yours by law - a check, a box. If a police officer asks you to turn off Lost Mode - turn it off, if you ask to delete it from iCloud - in no case do this. Then you just have to wait: either the police will find it, or the iPhone will be connected to the Internet for activation and you will receive a notification by mail, and you will be able to determine the location of the device.
Stole your phone what to do How to track your phone
Many of us have had a situation in which a mobile phone was stolen either from us or from someone we know. This, unfortunately, happens - petty thieves and fraudsters continue to hunt for gadgets in public places.
There are several explanations for this: Of course, mobile phones are stolen in order to sell. And from this we understand that, firstly, prices for modern cell phones are quite high (on average, a device costs 10-15 thousand rubles, if it is not an iPhone, but also not an old "push-button" model). In the event that an expensive phone (the same iPhone) is stolen, the price for a used gadget can reach 20-25 thousand. Secondly, today a mobile phone has become so common in everyday life of each of us that any passerby, in fact , has at least one mobile phone with him.
In the capital and large cities, especially in the central part, you can meet people who wear two mobiles. Imagine the temptation of thieves, wherever you are and how many phones you have - try to protect yourself as much as possible from such incidents.
Agree, even if a cell phone is stolen, which is not of great value, the very fact of loss and loss of personal data is unpleasant. Perhaps someone has stored valuable photos or correspondence on their smartphone, or something else that should not get to other people.
The feeling of being available to someone else is very unpleasant, so when you are in public places, try to feel your device. For example, put it in an inner pocket or in the very back of a bag, cover it with something. As a last resort, if you have nowhere to put your mobile - carry it in your hand - the chances that it will be taken away from you are less than the likelihood that it will be pulled out “quietly.” However, we understand that it is one thing to give well-known advice, but absolutely another is to get into a difficult life situation when, in practice, a phone was stolen.
What to do in this case, read on. First of all, you need to lock your device. This should be done as soon as possible, preferably immediately after the discovery of the loss. However, for this you need a secret 15-digit code, also known as IMEI.
This number itself represents the identifier with which your device is tagged. All mobile phones have it, and it is very easy to find it. You can see it in the box that you received with the device, and you can also dial the combination * 06 #.
Tip for the future - put your phone number in a place where you can find it at any time. For example, in a wallet. If you are afraid that it will be pulled out along with your mobile phone, store the IMEI somewhere in your mailbox, which you always have access to. Next, you need to contact the operator with the fact that your phone was stolen. What to do more specifically, we have already specified above - you should block the device, make it useless for the criminal.
For this you need the IMEI code. Your mobile provider can send a blocking signal even to a switched off phone. Let's assume that we managed to disable the device.
